Mileyshka's Global Learning Experience
Medallion Reflection
Global Perspective: As a servant leader and a person who provides service to the community it is important to step back and allow yourself to learn from others. I find it so rich to be able to collaborate and feed of off ideas mutually. My global perspective has enriched since I got to FIU. I have taken a handful of GL courses. I first started taking them to meet FIU's requirements but soon after I became fascinated with religion, culture, identities and all they have to offer. Becoming culturally competent has prepared me for the professional world and I believe I am a better person for it. I worked first hand with individuals who had a different perspective from mine on my internship to Guatemala. I had to learn to do things as they did because I was now foreign to their way of doing things. We had to learn to collaborate on things that would better them without stripping away their identity.
Global Awareness: The sooner you realize there is a much bigger world than the world you step out into everyday, than the sooner you will realize the greater purpose. Culture, religion, sexuality, we are all identify with them across the world. Just like climate affects us all no matter where we are. As a person who is interested in health I would like to use Zika as an example. It has been reported that Zika has affected several countries to date; it is not an issue that exists in a vacuum. Climate change is another great example. Around the world there have been reports about drastic climate change and the debates on what has caused it.
Global Engagement: I am a person who enjoys providing service. I have volunteered at hospitals, in school functions, church, and more. During my internship in Guatemala I was able to provide international service. I had the great honor of brainstorming and actualizing a project that would, not completely solve, but definitely help the problem of food insecurity.
