Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC)

"What is empathy without activism?"

The year of 2015- 2016, I was the co- campaing coordinator of GlobeMed at FIU. I along with three outstanding ladies spent a month in Guatemala during the summer as GlobeMed interns at Escuela de la Calle. We fundraised money to establish un Huerto Escolar, a school- based garden. The project was established to provide not only a fun learning activity for the children but also to teach them natural and low maintenance way of acquiring vegetables. This project will be sustainable and offer benefits to local children and community members of Las Rosas. We even helped host a cooking class for the mother's of the children in EDELAC; they were taught by a local chef how to make a delicious mango salad.

In addition, we were in charge of drafting a lesson plan on sexual reproduction. We taught grades four, five and six, along with teenagers from El Hogar, an orphanage who partners with EDELAC. Each day of the week we had a new topic to introduce to everyone that lasted from 30 minutes to an hour per grade.

At El Hogar, in addition to the sex ed. lessons, we spent two afternoons out of the week doing engaging outdoor activities. The activities consisted of Zumba lessons, workout routines, as well as bachata and salsa lessons.

The partnership’s project emphasizes on human rights, empowerment, and health and basic services. The program focuses on a  health education program and a preventative health program for the community.
